Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Foothills County and neighbouring regions on July 12.

Highs are expected to exceed 30 degrees C through Saturday, except for Thursday, which will hit around 28 C. Those hot temperatures combined with warm overnight lows are forecast to begin today and are expected to last into the weekend.

The Town of Okotoks has opened cooling stations in several locations during this period of hot weather. Click here for more information on cooling station hours and locations.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperatures are expected to pose a higher risk of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Individuals that can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat include infants and children, seniors, individuals with pre-existing conditions or those who work outside, and Environment Canada recommends checking in with those who are socially isolated.

Symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion include high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting and unconsciousness, according to Environment Canada.

People in areas affected by this warning are encouraged to take precautions to protect themselves, including completing outdoor activities during cooler hours during the day, drinking plenty of water and taking breaks from the heat, and making sure children and pets are not left in vehicles for any amount of time.
