Turner Valley Gas Plant employees and local firefighters quickly extinguished a grass fire that ignited at the historic site early this afternoon.

Turner Valley Fire Chief Glenn Baxter said firefighters from Turner Valley and Black Diamond responded to a call just before 1 p.m. April 19. Upon arriving at the scene they noticed most of the fire had been extinguished.

“Some of the employees at the gas plant compressor station were there and had already knocked down a substantial amount of the fire using portable extinguishers,” said Baxter.

The fire burned about an acre of grass inside the fence of the gas plant, but did not reach any structures. No one was injured as a result of the blaze.

Baxter said conditions are extremely dry in the area despite recent moisture and he asks the public take extra caution with burning barrels and flammable materials.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
