Grass fire scorches field near Turner Valley

Fire chief urges caution with dry conditions

A field is scorched and one man injured after a grass fire near Turner Valley Saturday afternoon.

The call came in around 1:30 p.m. that a fire had started in a field off 402 Ave. near Highway 22 north of town.

Turner Valley and Black Diamond Fire Departments responded, said Black Diamond Fire Chief Jamie Campbell, who added the burn area was easily 10-20 acres in size.

The initial cause is believed to be from metal work being done in the field, Campbell said, and the dry conditions in the field made for ripe tinder.

One member of the public was injured while initially trying to extinguish the fire, suffering burns to the leg. He was treated by firefighters and EMS at the scene before being transported to hospital via ambulance.

As spring approaches, Campbell urged caution with fires, burn barrels, and anything causing sparks with dry conditions in the Foothills area.
