Police are investigating following an altercation in Banff last night that left one man dead.

They responded to a call around 12:09 a.m. Sept. 3 indicating a man had been stabbed outside of a drinking establishment on Banff Avenue.

An RCMP press release states officers found an injured 27-year-old male from Foothills County, who was transported to hospital where he was declared deceased.

Two men were taken into custody at a nearby location, and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation in conjunction with Banff RCMP and the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit.

An update from the RCMP on Sept. 4 stated 20-year-old John Sproule, a resident of Lake Country, B.C., has been charged with second degree murder.

A second suspect was released from police custody without charges, as it was determined he was not directly involved.

Authorities are seeking to identify and speak with anyone who may have witnessed or has information about the incident.

This was the second deadly stabbing in Banff in just under a month. On Aug. 5 Ethan Enns-Goneau, a 26-year-old lifelong resident of the town, was killed at a club on Banff Ave.

The RCMP stated in the release the two incidents were not related.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Banff RCMP at (403) 763-6600, or their local police.
