Firefighters work to extinguish a fire that consumed a garage at a Blackie residence on Sept. 3.

Fire crews responded to Blackie for a structure fire Friday morning.

The call came in around 8:15 a.m. of a garage on fire. When firefighters arrived, they found a detached garage engulfed in flames, said Foothills Fire Chief Rick Saulnier.

Neighbour Bill Hawken, who lives across the back alley, awoke to the blaze.

"I just woke up, there was this large bang, and by the time I got outside, the fire was already coming out of the roof," Hawken said. "It just went like a tinder box."

While flames didn't spread to other structures, the heat from the blaze did damage siding on adjacent homes.

Nobody was harmed by the fire, but a power-pole was also damaged.

Crews from Blackie, High River, and Black Diamond worked together to contain the fire, which was extinguished around 8:45 a.m.

As of 10 a.m. crews remained on scene to extinguish hot spots and utility crews attended to safely deal with the power pole.

The cause of the fire is still investigation, Saulnier added.
