A Foothills livestock owner found a grisly scene on his property Sunday afternoon.

High River RCMP received reports on June 13 of a fatal animal shooting that had occurred between June 11 and June 12. A Cayley-area rancher discovered three of his lambs had been shot in the neck by what is suspected to be a small caliber rifle with a scope.

It is believed the suspect shot the animals from the side of the road on 690 Ave. south of Cayley.

“The owner estimates it happened sometime after Friday evening,” said High River RCMP Cst. David MacNeil. “He had let his flock of 64 out over the weekend and on Sunday afternoon he located three sheep shot in three different areas.”

MacNeil said there are not a lot of homes in the area, so the pasture was fairly remote.

There was no evidence left at the scene to help identify the shooter, he said.

“We have no suspects at this time,” said MacNeil. “We need the public’s assistance, to report if they hear anything or saw any suspicious vehicles in the area.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the High River RCMP at 403-652-2357 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477) or at www.tipsubmit.com.
