The community of DeWinton is bringing back its annual Canada Day breakfast.

DeWinton has been hosting the famous pancake breakfast since the early 1980s as this year marks the 40th anniversary of the event.

The breakfast is organized by the DeWinton Community Association, which is excited by the milestone anniversary as well as having a chance to celebrate Canada Day after cancelling the event the last couple of years.

“We're just trying to welcome back as many people and thank them for paying the membership over the last couple of years, even though there's been no events,” said Trudy Vangilst, organizer of the event and member of the association since 1988.

Vangilst mentioned the event has always been so popular due to the amazing breakfast the association works hard to provide.

The volunteers in the kitchen prepare food for about 600 people.

Michele Waldner, a member of the community association, said this year's breakfast is going to have a lot more activities compared to previous years.

The event will see Okotoks’ The Eagle radio station do its morning show live from the breakfast, while Goodger-Pink Family Theatre will be starting its performances at 10 a.m. Body painter Kayleen Pike will be at the event along with a petting zoo for children.

“She [Pike] does fabulous face paintings for the kids," Waldner said. "Our local fire truck is coming and we will also have some antique cars there."

Since the association is a non-profit organization, it was difficult to run any events during the pandemic. Waldner said it cancelled all celebrations for the safety of the members during that time.

“The event brings out everybody, a lot of the old-timers that are well into their 80s that have been coming ever since we've had a community hall to the younger ones that are in preschool,” said Vangilst.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon at  DeWinton Community Hall. Breakfast costs $8 for adults and $4 for children (under six are free). Community members in good standing have a chance to receive two free tickets per household they can pick up at the community hall between June 1 and 24.
