DeWinton man charged with weapons, drug offences after search

Police searched a property in DeWinton and two locations in Calgary in connection to an ongoing investigation of break and enters in the city.

A DeWinton man has been charged with weapons and drug offences in connection to an investigation by the Calgary Police Service.

Police conducted a search at a home on the 16000 block of Highway 552 in Foothills County, and at two storage units in Calgary, on Sept. 11 in relation to an ongoing investigation, said a news release from CPS on Sept. 25.

Twelve firearms, body armour, drugs and numerous items believed to have been stolen were seized following the search.

Other property seized includes a utility trailer, a Suzuki motorcycle, a Kawasaki dirt bike and items related to new home construction, including microwaves, a gas fireplace insert, unopened boxes of tile and flooring, new faucets, new kitchen and bathroom sinks, a cooktop and a washing machine.

Police believe the majority of the items were stolen during break and enters that took place throughout Calgary.

Zsolt Ignac Lazar, 46, of DeWinton, has been charged with four counts each of possession of an unlicensed weapon and possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order, and one count each of possession of a controlled substance and careless storage of a firearm.

"This investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be laid as new evidence comes to light," said Acting Staff Sgt. Shelby Stewart of the CPS District 4 General Investigations Unit.

The investigation began in May after a suspect was identified in break and enters at new home construction sites in Calgary. Investigators located two storage units that police say were being used to store stolen property.

The stolen property is being catalogued and police hope to return it to its rightful owners.

"If any person or company has been the victim of a break and enter, we encourage them to report it to police so that we are able to reunite them with their property when it’s been recovered," Stewart said.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service by calling 403-266-1234.
