Fire departments from throughout the Foothills area are fighting a pair of fires south of High River.

Foothills area firefighters have two grassfires south of High River held for the time being.

"One is by 594 Avenue and 16 Street W and that is roughly 200 acres and the other is at 540 Ave. and 16 St.E, that is about 250 acres," said Clayton Terletski Foothills director of emergency management. "At present, they aren't contained or out yet, but we have them held."

There are several departments from the surrounding area assisting at the grassfires.

Foothills School Division is monitoring the situation closely as it is in the Cayley School jurisdiction.

The division's emergency response procedures have been activated due to this nearby incident.

"We are actively monitoring the situation and are in communication with the County of Foothills Emergency Management team," said Candace Denison, Foothills School Division communications manager.

The K-to-Grade 8 Cayley school remains open and is not in danger.

"The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority," Denison said. "We will provide further information as it becomes available."
