Norma Lang wants to be Ward 1’s new trustee for Rocky View Schools (RVS).

She has worked as a councillor in Crossfield for the last six years and has a Commerce degree to augment her fiscal-minded nature.

“I have a background of looking at financial statements which helps a lot,” said Lang, who has two young children. “As a Town councillor, your job is managing budgets.”

Lang said she won’t lose sight of what’s in front of her, if elected.

“It’s important to think regionally,” she said. “School board trustees have to think of people in their region.”

As with other schools divisions, Lang said RVS needs to raise its voice in lobbying the Provincial government to ensure successful futures for kids.

“Ed Stelmach and Dave Hancock need to hear from people that education is a priority in this province,” said Lang. “Local governments can be powerful allies when it comes to lobbying the Province.”

Her work in Crossfield has given her experience when it comes to lobbying and standing up for worthy causes and she vows to carry on that responsibility as a RVS trustee.

“I believe that coming out of six years as a municipal councillor and being as well connected as I am with municipalities across the division… I could be very valuable asset on the school board,” said Lang.

Lang will try and have instructors come to Ward 1 as a teaching destination, not a stepping stone to larger centres like Calgary.

“That’s not really how it happens right now,” said Lang. “The constant turn over of teachers (in Ward 1), it’s something I want to look into.”

Rocky View Schools (RVS) has announced a Ward 1 all-candidates forum ahead of the Oct. 18 trustee election.

Jo-Anne Lambert, Norma Lang, Shauna Traub and incumbent Jen Avery will have three to five minutes to speak in Crossfield, Beiseker and Irricana.

Candidates will attend both Crossfield and Beiseker in one evening, Oct. 4. They will be first on Crossfield council’s agenda and last on Beiseker council’s agenda to allow for travel time. Oct. 7 they will present in Irricana at 7 p.m.

All candidates will give a speech, field questions from the audience and then present again.

Ward 1 represents Balzac, Crossfield, Beiseker, Irricana, Kathryn and Rural Airdrie.

Trustees in all other wards are acclaimed.
