Contest to pick site for pop up party

Okotoks residents have a chance to bring a community party to their neighbourhood park this summer.

The Town is holding a contest to select the location for the second annual Pop Up in the Park on Aug. 19.

Allan Boss, Okotoks culture and heritage manager, said the Town has a long roster of downtown events, with few others held elsewhere in the community.

Last year’s inaugural event was held in Cimarron Park as a way to bring more events out into other parts of town.

“We do a lot of events in the downtown core,” he said. “They’re great events and they’re a lot of fun, but how do we connect with the neighbourhoods around Okotoks in a more tangible fashion. Instead of always bringing everyone down here, what about we go out there.”

This year, the Town is leaving it up to residents to select the location. To nominate a site, people can take fun, family friendly pictures in their local park along with a brief 10 word description.

Submissions can be sent to [email protected]. The photos will be put on the Town’s Culture and Heritage Facebook page for people to vote on by ‘liking’ their favourite. The park with the most likes wins.

Last year’s pop up event included musical performers, a magician, food trucks, ice cream, a play performed by Goodger-Pink Family Theatre, as well as information booths from several service clubs and business sponsors and winners from Lemonade Day.

“It was a fun day in the park where you got to listen to music and see some other events and visit some of the tents that were there,” he said.

Plans aren’t set for this year, but similar activities could be expected.

The deadline for entries is March 5 and voting on Facebook will go from March 6 to 12. The winner will be announced March 15.
