New gateway signage couldn't store enough battery power to light up this winter.

Workers install the new welcome sign at the northern limits of Okotoks on Dec. 2, 2021.

Three signs installed on the outskirts of Okotoks town limits in 2021 haven't been living up to their expectations.

The new gateway signage, intended to reflect updated annexation boundaries and express the Town's character through colour and design, has been sitting dark most nights this winter, despite its solar capabilities.

In a report presented to council this week, following an inquiry by Coun. Gord Lang, community growth, investment and sustainability director Jeff Greene said the contracted company was contacted to investigate the problem.

It came to the conclusion that the electrical service was not powerful enough, which left the battery with insufficient capacity to hold a charge in the colder months.

The company is required to fix the issue at its expense, as per a contract. It has estimated repairs will be completed in six weeks.
