The community came out in full-force to support local firefighters by dishing out some dough on the weekend at the Blackie Community Hall.

The Blackie Lions pancake breakfast was packed Saturday morning in an effort to help firefighters raise funds for an automated external defibrillator for the hall.

Mission accomplished. The pancake breakfast – a full plate of sausages, bacon, eggs, flapjacks, ham and other goodies – was the cost of a donation.

Blackie opened its wallets in attempting to raise the $2,000 cost for an AED.

“We wanted the AED in the hall because there are a lot of events in the hall,” said Blackie Fire Captain David Simms. “And it saves lives.”

He said quick use of an AED, can result in a 75 per cent increase in survival for individual suffering cardiac arrest.

He said the pancake breakfast couldn’t have been held at a better time in light of the grassfire on March 31.

“It is a good day to get together,” Simms said. “It was definitely quieter for us today.”
