Comedians battle cancer with humour

Breast cancer is never a joke, but five comedians are using comedy to raise money to fight breast cancer in communities across Alberta.

The Boob Tour arrives in Canmore on Oct. 5 with Canmore’s own Amy Trofimuk performing alongside comedians James Uloth, Mark Fry, Tommy Savitt and Lars Callieou.

Trofimuk helped organize the Canmore tour stop and has been amazed at the response so far. “Everyone is so excited. The buzz has been unreal,” she said.

Trofimuk started in comedy about 10 years ago when she volunteered to help out at a Calgary comedy festival and ended up taking the stage. Since then, she has split her time between a full-time job in Calgary, touring as a stand-up comedian and using her comic talents in a variety of roles.

As chief organizer of the now-defunct Rocky Mountain Comedy Festival, Trofimuk was an obvious choice to pull together the Canmore stop on The Boob Tour. “It’s going to be a non-stop hilarious evening,” she said.

Organizer James Uloth was inspired to raise money to fight breast cancer after a close friend’s mother died of the disease. Trofimuk’s grandmother was a breast cancer survivor and she also has a number of friends who have been affected by the disease, so it means a lot to her that all the funds are going to the Canmore and Area Health Care Foundation to help breast cancer survivors.

“It’s helping give back to the community. It makes it that much more special that money is going back into the health foundation,” said Trofimuk.

The Boob Tour stops at Cornerstone Theatre & Restaurant on Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available on the Cornerstone website: www.atthecorner.ca
