A new candidate for Irricana council is hoping to use his business expertise to help the town reach its full potential.
Steve White, 58, is new to politics, but has a wealth of experience in big business, contracts, management, and negotiation skills.
“I was encouraged by a number of people in Irricana to run,” said White, who is married to Irricana’s CAO Carol White. “Irricana has a very positive future, and I would like to be part of that.”
White is passionate about his community, saying he enjoys the small town atmosphere and knowing his neighbours.
“It is a very friendly community and it is a great place to bring up your kids,” said White.
He would like to see development, but says it must be a good fit for Irricana.
“It has to be a win-win situation for everyone,” said White, who has lived in Irricana on and off for 10 years.
White, who currently runs his own small business in Irricana, said there are several key issues in town including relatively high taxes and water rates. Although some of the causes may be out of his control, White said he would work towards finding solutions.
He said he would like Irricana to join the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, to keep abreast of what is happening in the business world, network and to help attract business to town.
According to White, the town could move from its current commuter rate of 80 per cent down to a rate of around 50 per cent, with proper marketing.
Start-up companies might find Irricana a good fit, he said.
“It is baby steps right now,” said White.
White has been an active member of his community, volunteering many hours for Active, Creative and Engaged Communities, Irricana Lions Club and serving as president of the Irricana and District Agricultural Society.
“Everything in Irricana happens around volunteering,” said White, who tried to start a chapter of Citizens on Patrol last year. “If you don’t have volunteers, you don’t have anything.”
If elected, White promises to listen to the people, something he is passionate about.
“At the end of the day, it is what the people want for Irricana, not what I want,” said White. “I really think we have to figure out what the people want.”
