A house near Millarville is burnt, but intact, after fire ripped through it Wednesday morning.

Fire crews responded to a structure fire on 240 Street West at around 11 a.m. Jan. 9 to find the walkout basement engulfed in flames.

According to Foothills fire chief Jim Smith, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and save the structure before it could spread to the upper floors.

"We did a really good knock down, saved the structure, kept the fire to the basement," said Smith.

Smith believes the fire originated in the basement, but said the cause remains under investigation.

"We know where it started, we just don't know what, so we'll be digging in there."

Homeowner Kenny Marriott and his wife Brittany had just left home when a neighbour called. The neighbour spotted the smoke and called 911.

Marriott said they were okay for the most part.

"We lost a couple of cats, but that's about it so we'll consider ourselves lucky," said Marriott.

Turner Valley Fire Department was backed by crews from Foothills, Black Diamond, Priddis, and Okotoks.

Correction: It was originally posted that Foothills crews were assisted by Turner Valley, but Turner Valley was the initial responding fire department.
