A Calgary man’s lead-footed driving cost him.

On March 9, Henok Tekie, of Calgary, was fined $800 for speeding 75 km-per-hour over the speed limit on Highway 2A north of Okotoks. He was also given a 30-day driving prohibition after pleading guilty in Okotoks Provincial Court.

The fine stems from Aug. 9, 2014 when Okotoks RCMP officers conducting routine traffic enforcement clocked him driving 175 km-per-hour in a 100 km-per-hour speed zone.

Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Jim Ross said anyone driving at these speeds is putting themselves and others at risk.

“For everybody’s safety the rules of the road should be maintained and when someone’s [driving] 75 kilometes over the posted speed limit, it’s quite concerning,” he said.

He said anyone driving at those speeds does not have enough time to react to other drivers, wildlife or other hazards that may suddenly appear. And, the results of a collision could be horrific.

“When you’re going that fast, your reaction time to stop safely is reduced drastically,” he said.

He said RCMP are unfortunately seeing more cases of excessive speeding.
