Regional one-act play festival in Okotoks this weekend

Okotoks' Dewdney Players will be one of five troupes competing for a provincial spot during festival at Rotary Performing Arts Centre.

Thespians from across southern Alberta will be performing in Okotoks this weekend in a bid to qualify for the upcoming provincial festival.

Alongside Okotoks' own Dewdney Players, troupes from High River, Canmore and Strathmore will be performing in the Alberta Drama Festival Association Foothills Regional One Act Play Festival at the Rotary Performing Arts Centre.

Five troupes will perform 11 one-act plays.

Dewdney Players will stage three productions: August Heat, a supernatural play adapted from a short story written by W. F. Harvey in 1910; Mother Figure, the first of a 1974 five-play anthology by Alan Ayckborn titled Confusions; and The Demon, a supernatural thriller based on Martin Downing's 1993 book.

"These one-act play festivals are going on across the province," said longtime Dewdney Players member Ed Sands. "And then one play is picked from the region to compete in the provincials and that's going to be up in Grand Prairie this year in May."

The Alberta Drama Festival Association is hosting the 49th annual provincial competition on May 19 and 20.

There will be three sessions at the Foothills Regional One Act Play Festival: 7 p.m. on Friday, March 22 as well as 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 23. Tickets are available here
