An Okotoks resident has created a scavenger hunt that will have participants racing through town.

The Okotoks Scavenger Race, taking place on June 4, features a Run, Walk, and Kids race.

“The idea is that you run around Okotoks finding points, and it’s not like your regular scavenger hunt where the points are super obvious,” said organizer Chantal St-Jean.

The race will be entirely virtual, with participants tracking their progress and times through the Strava app. They will have to submit a screenshot of the app’s map and times at the finish.

“They will have to send me an email with a picture of Strava saying how long it took them, and of their answer sheet, and then based on that we’ve got some top prizes and stuff,” St-Jean said.

The race was inspired by a similar one St-Jean took part in at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

“A couple months ago a friend of mine put together an adventure race at Fish Creek,” St-Jean said.

“It’s kind of a mixture between orienteering and a running race.”

Not wanting to leave out those not interested in running, or younger participants, St-Jean created three categories, the run race (approximately 10-15 km), walk race (8-10 km), or kids race (5-6 km).

“I was talking to my sons about it and they said they wished there was something like that here,” she said.

“And some people I work with aren’t necessarily runners, and they wanted a walk version.”

The entry fees are going to charity, with competitors donating directly to them.

“They just donate directly to either Kid Sport or the Foothills Country Hospice and show me their donation receipt,” she said.

The fee for the kids race is a $25 donation to Kid Sport, the walk race is $30 to the hospice, and the running race is $45 to the hospice. Swag bags for the first 100 entries will also be available; 25 bags for kids, 30 bags for walkers, and 45 bags for runners.

With registrations being done in advance, race packages can be picked up at the following times and places:

Kids race - Tuesday May 31 from 3:30-5 p.m. at 94 Take the Cake

Walk race - Wednesday June 1 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Hub Town Brewery

Run race - Friday June 3 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Big Beaver Brewery
