Okotoks students of the arts are putting on a sweet show next week.

For the second annual Alberta High School of Fine Arts Sweet Showcase, the school’s various performing arts programs will be doing just that, showcasing their work at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, with a cake auction to fund their young artists.

“There will be a sneak peek of two musical numbers from our musical production of Chicago (teen edition), as well as our jazz band and vocal ensemble performances,” said musical theatre and drama teacher Jessica Kelly.

“It’s a really great, fun night where we’re hoping to have some really awesome cakes donated again this year and auctioned off for a good cause.”

To sweeten the pot, cakes donated by the community will be sold off in a live auction, as well as the silent auction during performances as a fundraiser.

“We’re trying to raise funds to support the Alberta High School of Fine Arts Society,” said Kelly, adding those funds serve a number of goals.

“Our society has scholarships and bursaries that students can apply for to access and further pursue their passion for the fine arts, whether it’s outside of school hours or in post-secondary."

The event as a whole isn’t just open to parents, but anyone wanting to see the next generation of Okotoks’ artistic talent.

“Our goal as the fine arts team is to create more connections and collaborations in our community,” Kelly said. “So the more we can showcase what we’re working on here at the school with community members, families and friends, the better.

“Some people may not know we have a great jazz band, or have never seen our vocal ensemble perform, or aren’t sure what to expect from Chicago.”

Getting to show their work to the community is a blessing, Kelly said, as it demonstrates their hard work, even this early in the season.

“The kids always work so hard, because they care so much about their respective programs,” Kelly said.

“We have a fantastic ensemble and really talented, dedicated leads, and they’re working to be show-ready and working to be ready for the showcase.”
