Okotoks circus students are bringing back their public performance this weekend.

The students of Spectacle Blue Circus Arts’ performance company will be putting on their Winter Wonderland show Dec. 16-18.

“It’s kind of a repertoire show – it's kind of the same, only different every single year," said Spectacle Blue owner and creative director Robin Szuch.

“The first act is always about the magic of winter, so we have snowfall, we have frosted windows, we have snow angels. Then the second act is like a big winter party, so we’re skiing, we’re tobogganing, but it’s all in a sort of circus magic.”

The show marks the return after two years of limited public performances.

“It’s been great to be fully back,” Szuch said. “It was two years of not meeting any parents, so it’s nice for me now to be reconnecting and parents who are new to us know us a little better.”

While the public performances may have lapsed, a core body of student performers has held strong.

“Some of these kids have been with me since the very first time we did the Winter Wonderland, in 2014,” Szuch said. “Then there’s some more brand new first timers – it's always such a nice mix.”

One of those long-time students, 17-year-old Jada MacLeod, has been with the school's performance company since the beginning and has performed in every role in the Winter Wonderland show.

This year, she takes the crown as the central character.

“I’m the snow queen - it’s all kind of mystical and magical and I’m the queen of all that,” said MacLeod.

“I always get nervous before but it’s always awesome – seeing people's reaction to the show is always positive. It’s really awesome to see how it’s grown.”

Show times are 7 p.m. Dec. 16, 17 and at 2 p.m. 18 and tickets can be purchased at spectacleblue.ca.
