The Windmill Theatre Players' 'Charitable Sisterhood Christmas Spectacular' opens this weekend, telling the story of four church ladies, a private investigator, and a missing baby Jesus.

High River’s community theatre troupe opens their newest show this weekend.

The Charitable Sisterhood Christmas Spectacular, put on by the Windmill Theatre Players, opens this weekend at the Highwood Memorial Centre.

Selling out the first two nights, this Sunday's matinee still has spots on Nov. 19 at 2 pm., as well as the Nov. 24 and 25 shows at 7:30 p.m.

The comedy is set around the fictitious Second Trinity Church and the ladies volunteering to prepare for Christmas.

Tensions already running high, somebody steals baby Jesus from the nativity.

“It’s a play about church ladies, church ladies who get competitive, and some items go missing,” said co-director Don Gaede.

“They’re really nasty on the surface, but nice underneath, and that’s kind of the gist of the story.”

In the ensuing investigation, a private eye named Janet is called in, played by Windmill newcomer Kodi Hope.

“It’s really fun, and maybe not what I would have done in the past,” Hope said. “And the other girls are hilarious.”

Falling into step with her cast mates, the actor hit her stride with the comedy.

“All of the other actors have done a really good job of figuring out who their characters are,” Hope said, adding she was drawn to the theatre group for the first time after seeing last year’s production of Young Frankenstein.

“I’ve really loved it, and they’re all very welcoming and helpful.

“I got that feeling when I went to their Young Frankenstein play; I was watching it and was like, ‘I really like this group of people.’

Tickets are still available for Nov. 19 at 2 p.m., Nov. 24-25 at 7:30 p.m., and can be found at windmilltheatreplayers.com/tickets.php.
