Town needs to support Okotoks skatepark

Dear Editor, It appears that councillors may have forgotten the history of discussion surrounding the Okotoks Tennis Courts/Club and the needs of the Okotoks Skateboard Park.

Dear Editor,

It appears that councillors may have forgotten the history of discussion surrounding the Okotoks Tennis Courts/Club and the needs of the Okotoks Skateboard Park.

Last year, council requested that staff produce a contract between the Tennis Club and the Town of Okotoks. It never transpired. The Okotoks Tennis Club (OTC) is the key holder and private sole provider for these public courts maintained by the Town (taxpayer). The OTC charges the public a hefty fee for these taxpayer-funded courts and to my knowledge, the taxpayers’ money goes straight to the tennis club not to the Town to maintain upgrades.

In the meantime, the skateboard park which is used by hundreds of youth all year long, can’t even get Town staff to shovel the snow off the park during mild winter conditions or have enough trash cans to keep the litter under control — the Town requires the skateboard association to maintain it. The skateboard association has had meetings with staff/council requesting trash cans, cleanup etc.

Littler Field put on hold? Is this because the Dawgs are providing something new? Our grants should be going where the majority of public play is, not where a handful of people want it. More basketball courts anyone?
