Students' musical performance was powerful

Dear Editor,

The musical Les Miserables is a family favourite, we have had the pleasure of seeing this musical a number of occasions, one of which was in London, England.

Because our son Aaric was providing back stage support to the presentation of Les Miserables at Foothills Composite High School in Okotoks we decided to go. It was with some trepidation that I attended; anyone who has seen a production of Les Miserables knows what a complicated musical it is.

The experience was amazing. Although I have limited knowledge when it comes to evaluating something like this I can tell when things are not in tune. We still listen to the Les Miserables CDs and know it well. The orchestra was excellent, the acting superb and the singing was amazing. This performance was as powerful as any I have seen. I can’t imagine the hours this group of young adults must have put in to attain this kind of quality.

We seem to hear of the negative things our youth are up to rather than the positive. Here is an opportunity for us to recognize some of the great things the youth are doing in the community.

As with most products of excellence there are those in the background working with this group: the educators, Mrs. Kelly Van Sluys, Ms. Nicole Hounjet and Mr. James Keary. The hours of personal time these three must have put in to ensure this level of excellence speaks to their integrity and commitment. Congratulations, and thank you.

I expect there are many such as you in our education system that is committed to the growth and development to our youth. We don’t often get opportunity to recognize your leadership.

Education is not a business; it is the development of individuals. As well as the core subjects, the arts and athletics contribute to the development of our youth.
