Proposed landfill will only use half of site

Dear Editor:

The opponents to the Prairie Sky Resource Centre proposal have been very aggressive in claiming that 960 acres of prime farmland will be lost to this facility. As part of the concerned group of citizens and businesses of Blackie we felt it was important that we got the FACTS.

We contacted BFI Canada and asked for a site plan and how many acres were being dedicated to what use. This is what we found out.

A minimum of 380 acres will continue to be used for agricultural purposes and another 148 will be used for wetlands and natural habitat...that means that more than half of the 960 acres will be used for agricultural /environmental purposes. The landfill footprint itself will be a small portion of the overall site at 189 acres.

Based on my calculations 15.4% will be left in its natural state and 39.6% will be available for farming that’s 55% of the site will remain unchanged. That’s a far cry from the 960 acres lost that the opponents to this site keep claiming. What other Facts do they have wrong??
