Halloween not the time to preach religion

Dear Editor, Halloween, I understand the religious connotations behind the day, a celebration honouring the dead.

Dear Editor,

Halloween, I understand the religious connotations behind the day, a celebration honouring the dead.

The Celts believed that the souls of the dead roamed the streets at night, so they left gifts and treats out to satisfy them and make sure crops were good the following year, (hence trick or treat). This year our 12-year-old received a pamphlet telling him that he could not do enough good things to pay the penalty for his sins, and the wages of sin is death, and would be separated from god forever.

We are Catholic, and so are our children, we have our beliefs, they may not be the same as others, but they are all along the same lines. We believe that Halloween is for the kids, they get to dress up, go out and have some fun and parents get to enjoy all the costumes and visiting with other parents in the neighborhood.

So, maybe for the one night a year, we can keep our religious beliefs to ourselves, give out some candy and let children be children.
