Blackie residents need assurances dump is safe

Dear Editor, Not long ago we moved to Blackie, thankful to be leaving the big city life. Imagine our surprise when the conglomerate, BFI chose Blackie as their latest possible dump site.

Dear Editor,

Not long ago we moved to Blackie, thankful to be leaving the big city life.

Imagine our surprise when the conglomerate, BFI chose Blackie as their latest possible dump site.

For the record, no matter how BFI dresses this proposed venture up, we do not want your dump; we enjoy the prairie sky just the way it is.

In Canada we have the great good fortune of abundant and excellent drinking water coming out of our Rocky Mountains. In Blackie and surrounding areas we have high water tables.

Our community has many questions that require substantiated answers before BFI proceeds further.

1. Can BFI absolutely guarantee your waste will not impact our drinking water and environment and what specific studies would you base your findings on?

2. Is this liner absolutely, undeniably and indefinably secure and safe and what assurances will your company give our community and surrounding area that it is?

3. What specific named toxins will go into our ground, how toxic are they and what are their known and suspected impacts and affects on humans, animals and habitat?

4. Are you willing to make public a specific list of what items and toxin waste will comprise the loads that are proposed to fill this land?

5. Who and what will be affected after you leave 35 years from now?

6. What absolute assurances is BFI willing to submit to the Blackie residents that this proposed site will be safe, that our water will not be compromised, that we will be safe, uncontaminated from environmental affects, including noise, filth of garbage debris and disease, not only for 35 to a 100 years from now but for the next 500 years?

7. How many vehicles will be on our roads per month and what specific routes will you be using, what times will your trucks be on the roads and will you be coming directly through Blackie?

We need these questions answered now before you take any further steps and we expect our local and provincial representatives to support us in our search for the truth in this matter.

I admit, I certainly don’t have a solution for the safe containment of toxic waste and I don’t wish the proposed Prairie Sky dump on any community, I just know we don't want it here.

I do know, however, our children will inherit our good and bad decisions.
