From stand-up comedy, the opera and 100-year celebrations to football and junior hockey rivalry nights — here's your entertainment guide for the final weekend of the summer.

CROSS-TOWN CLASH

High school football takes the spotlight under Friday Night Lights.

The Foothills Falcons host the Holy Trinity Academy Knights for their annual Blackout Game at the Comp.

The Big Rock Football Conference matchup is for bragging rights in Okotoks as well as having implications on seeding for the conference playoffs next month.

PUCK DROP

Okotoks’ two junior hockey offerings get a chance to make a positive first impression on Friday.

Both the Okotoks Jr. A Oilers and Okotoks Jr. B Bisons have their home openers on Sept. 20 with the Oilers unveiling their new Jumbotron while taking on the Camrose Kodiaks at Pason Centennial Arena at 7 p.m.

Over at the Murray Arena, the Bisons battle the High River Flyers to open the HJHL season for another chapter in the spirited rivalry. Puck-drop is 8 p.m.

 

BUST A GUT

If you’re in need of a laugh tonight, head to downtown Okotoks for this season’s first Yuk Yuk's on Tour show featuring Calgary stand-up comedians Kevin Stobo and Serena Shane.

Shane, who began stand up comedy eight year ago after her ex-husband told her she’s not funny, will open for Stobo, a comedian of 25 years who’s performed at the prestigious Just for Laughs gala at the world-famous Montreal Comedy Festival. Tickets cost $20 in advance or $25 at the door. They can be purchased by calling 403-938-3204.

DELIGHTFUL DRINKS

Sample some of the area’s best crafted beers, wines and spirits, as well as food from local restaurants, in MarketSquare’s inaugural BATCH tasting event.

The event will also feature artisans and vendors from Alberta. Admission is $10 and tasting tokens are $1 each with samples selling for two to five tokens.

APPLES GALORE

Celebrate fall harvest with Granary’s Road’s Applefest this weekend.

A LOOK AT THE PAST

Learn about a century of history while celebrating 100 years of the DeWinton Community Centre bringing the community together. The celebration, hosted by the DeWinton Heritage Committee, will include a lunch and snacks, memory lane displays, a historical slideshow, pioneer profiles presented by school children and outdoor games.

HITTING HIGH NOTES

Opera lovers, or those wanting to discover what all the hype is about, are invited to attend Samson et Dalila, a performance hosted by the Foothills Philharmonic Opera Chorus and Calgary Concert Opera Company.  This popular French love story tells of passion and betrayal.
