There’s no place like home

Follow the yellow brick road to the Land of Oz, pantomime style.

This weekend marks the last the talented Dewdney Players Group Theatre will bring James Barry’s two-act play The Wizard of Oz to the stage, complete with beloved characters from the 1939 cinematic success, yet with brighter costumes and over-the-top personalities.

Tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors in advance at okotoksculture.ca. Tickets purchased at the door cost $5 more.

What’s that sound?

Head on down to the Foothills Community Centre to listen to some cool cats getting down with jazz and funk tunes this weekend.

Jazz and choir students at Alberta High School of Fine Arts , Westmount School and Highwood High in High River are joining forces in an adult-only night of jazz they call Big Band Bash.

This loud, energetic social event is guaranteed to get you grooving on the dance floor.

Don’t miss out on the cake auction, silent auction, diamond ring blitz raffle and wine and cheese, all to raise money to support youth in music.

When: Friday, Feb. 8. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Home-town girl connected

Award-winning country singer Michela Sheedy performs at Tribal Connection Market on McRae Street on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. Sheedy, a Holy Trinity Academy grad, was named a top 12 finalist in Calgary's Project WILD - Country Artist Development Program.

Thundering towards first

The Okotoks Bisons' quest for first place in the Southern division of the Heritage Junior Hockey League continues Feb. 8 at the Murray Arena. However, the herd will have to weather the storm of the Airdrie Thunder, who sit in first place of the Northern Division with the best record in the league.

Puck drop is 8 p.m.


A combined effort

Foothills Falcon alumnus Bryn Roy, a former Montreal Al and 'Rider, brings the Bryn Roy Combines Feb. 9 to the Crescent Point Regional Field House near Aldersyde. The combine is a chance for high school football players to showcase their talent to coaches from Canadian universities  and a handful of American colleges.
