Derby day

The Rotary Club of Okotoks hosts its 30th annual Soap Box Derby on June 1. The event has approximately 100 youths going down Crystal Ridge Drive in their custom-made soapboxes.

When: Inspection, May 31, 5:30-7 p.m. (Time trials to follow). June 1, Races start at 9:30 a.m.

Dawg Days

The Okotoks Dawgs kick-off their home schedule for the 2019 WCBL season with a battle against the Edmonton Prospects on Friday.

Okotoks Academy graduate Jared Spearing is the starting pitcher in the home opener as the Dawgs look to improve to 2-0 in the regular season. The homestand continues with two games versus the Fort McMurray Giants on June 1-2.

Art hanging about

Enjoy the uniqueness of art hanging from clotheslines in the Leighton Art Centre’s annual Clothesline Festival this weekend.

Sixty-eight Alberta artists will have frameless paintings and drawings strung up in a show that draws up to 2,000 people to 80 acres of historic land northeast of Millarville. The event includes live music, artist demonstrations, children’s art activities, face painting, food vendors and more than 1,500 pieces of Alberta made art and fine crafts.

The big screen

Take in the works of filmmakers from Okotoks to around the world at the Okotoks Film Festival this weekend. Enjoy three international feature films, various shorts, workshops, parties and meet and greets with the 16 filmmakers in attendance. More than 700 films were submitted with 48 selected representing 14 countries.

Parade day

Take the whole family west for the Black Diamond Parade and Turner Valley Discovery Days. Activities include an artisan market, petting zoo, face painting, bouncy houses, dance party and various food trucks and charity barbecues.

Pride in the west

Celebrate western pride during the Way Out West Fest throughout Calgary and the Foothills. Featured locally is the Head West Curated Market with west-centric dishes, live music, western artisans, a photo booth, workshops, demonstrations and a polo match, as well as From Farm to Glass at Eau Claire Distillery in Turner Valley with farming demonstrations and a tour from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Seasoned musician Mike Burns will bring his range of country, rock and top 40 tunes to the Stage in Okotoks. Burns has been active in the Southern Alberta music scene since 2004 and is the active front man for the Mike Burns & Justified Band.

Experience the fascinating world of Norse culture at the Chinook Honey Company’s annual Horde at the Hive with a battle reenactment, craft market, Viking-style food and tour of the apiary and meadery.
