The Okotoks Garden club will be starting up once again this September and will be featuring some interesting and informative speakers.

Vivian Hirsch, one of the organizers of the Okotoks Garden Club, which is a non-profit organization, and is also an avid gardener. She said she is excited for the club to start up again and would like to see more people out at the meetings.

“We meet the first Wednesday of every month at the town library and we try to get guest speakers to join us throughout the year,” said Hirsch.

She added the garden speakers cover a variety of topics anyone who has a yard, garden or plants would find worthwhile.

“We have had guest speakers that discuss topics such as growing roses in our area, water gardens, edible plants, invasive plants in Alberta and self-watering planters,” said Hirsch.

There’s always something new and different to enjoy or learn about at each meeting, such as the plant exchange in June where members can trade plants with one another.

“At our first meeting of the year, we usually have a potluck and we discuss our successes and failures over the past summer,” said Hirsch. “At Christmas time we make center pieces with help from Okotoks Country Florist.”

There will be a new speaker in February to teach people about building eco-friendly yards and gardens.

“She is going to talk about something called eco-yards, which promotes environmentally friendly yards that is safe and healthy for children and pets and is a low maintenance landscape,” said Hirsch.

The Okotoks Garden Club was started about 10 years ago with the help of the Town, which donated the seed money needed to get the club up and running.

Hirsch said she has always loved growing flowers and she has a few favourites, but roses are at the top of her list.

“I love to grow flowers and my favourite would be roses. There are some roses that are easy to grow in this area, but I have to plant mine in the front of my house where I have more sun and deer really love roses,” said Hirsch.

With garden club about to begin, Hirsch said she would really like to see some fresh faces at the monthly meetings.

“It’s a great opportunity to come meet new people, learn new information and, of course, there’s always coffee and snacks afterwards,” she said.

The Okotoks Garden Club runs from September through to June and anyone is welcome to attend. The first meeting will be Sept. 7 from 6:45 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. at the Okotoks Public Library.
