Longview Library looking for volunteers

Volunteers are still needed to help Joan in the library. It would mean as little as an hour every week or every second week and it would be fun work if you are fond of books and like being around them. Give her a call if you can help at 403-558-3927.

A book you might enjoy is “The Distant Hours” by Kate Morton. It is a beguiling and enchanting mystery romance in which Morton creates vivid images and feelings in you with her magical writing. The book has gothic overtones with its ancient castle, its secret rooms and dark corridors. There are storms, a raging fire and eerie disappearances. You also find yourself in war torn London in the Second World War where a young child is evacuated to the castle for safe keeping as the bombs drop on the great city. It’s a long, lazy, delicious read best read curled up by the fire.

Another is “Left Neglected” by Lisa Genova, the author of the novel “Still Alice,” about a young woman with early onset of Alzheimer’s. This is another riveting story about a woman with damage to her brain after a horrific traffic accident. Sarah, the heroine, is vice-president of human resources for a strategy consulting firm in Boston. She has three small children and lives a frantic existence trying to juggle all her responsibilities. While driving to work, she reaches for her cell phone, and her car spins out of control at a high speed. The story traces her rehabilitation, the revelations and insights she gains, and the wisdom she develops as she realizes what really matters in life. Genova holds a PhD in neuroscience from Harvard University.
