A local group is looking for new members.

Airdrie Moms Time Out meets every Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Living Springs Church, located at 2304 Yankee Valley Road.

The group, which has been in existence for several years, hires babysitters to watch the children while the moms get together to visit.

“It is a really good chance for moms to get together…and get a break from their kids,” said coordinator Heather Zabawski. “The kids are taken care of in the same building, so you aren’t too far from them. It is a good intermediary step if you aren’t used to leaving your kids.”

Activities are planned throughout the year, including crafts and speakers who address a wide range of mom-oriented topics, such as Internet safety, yoga and finance.

“It is pretty casual,” said Zabawski, adding that all the activities are optional, and often, moms just get together to chat and share ideas.

Currently, about eight moms attend on a regular basis, but organizers are hoping to increase that number.

“We think it is a really good program and it is important for moms to have space and time away from their kids,” said Zabewski, who especially appreciates the chance to connect with other moms as her husband often works away from home.

Zabewski said joining the group helped her feel at home in Airdrie when she moved here a couple of years ago.

“It has helped me to get to know people in the community,” she said. “It also helped me to know about the community, such as what are good preschools, dance classes and where people go to the dentist.”

Single-mom Jasmine Myers has been attending Moms Time Out for about three years.

“It is just kind of like sanity,” said Myers, who has three boys.

“It is just neat to talk to other moms. A lot of us go through the same things and have the same frustrations. I look forward to Thursday mornings, it is my favourite day of the week.”

The cost of attending for two children and a mom is $10, which helps pay for babysitting.

The first visit is free.
