Once again, during the month of February all family Okotoks Public Library (OPL) accounts purchased or renewed will be given two years for the price of one. For $20, families will be able to borrow print and non-print materials until February 2013. The incentive is part of the library’s celebration of Family Day (Feb. 21) and Freedom to Read Week (Feb. 20-26).

“So many families use the library and help contribute to our success. Offering the two for one accounts is just one way we can recognize the adults, youth and children who truly make the library the heart of this community,” said library director Tessa Nettleton

Each year, OPL supports Freedom to Read Week. It is an event that “encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.” Although Canada is a democratic society, the freedom to read still needs to be defended against government actions and pressure from special interest groups who seek to limit public access to print materials in schools, libraries and bookstores. Stop into the library during the week of Feb. 20th and check out the display of banned books, and watch the library’s website for a listing of other Freedom to Read Week events being held at the library.

Parents of infants to age one can learn more about feeding and nutrition at a free RISE Network videoconference at the library on Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. Topics will include breastfeeding/formula, transitioning to solid foods, transitioning to table foods and allergy concerns. There will be plenty of time left for discussion and questions with a registered dietitian. To register, call the library at 403-938-2220.

Board members, executive directors and/or senior managers of non-profit or charitable organizations can explore accountability practices during the RISE Network videoconference entitled “Does Accountability Scare You?” During this two-hour free session running Feb. 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., participants will use a self-diagnostic tool to assess their organization’s current accountability practices and start to develop an action plan. A toolkit containing a self-diagnostic pack, a handbook, tip sheets and checklists will be provided. Pre-registration is required by calling the library.
