Bakers cooking up Christmas Joy for charities

Entertainment: Big Rock Singers' Christmas Joy – A Celtic Celebration will have three performances Dec. 6-7

Some young ladies are taking the lead in raising dough – literally – for Foothills area charities.

Approximately eight girls from various schools gathered at the Okotoks United Church on Nov. 23 to back goodies to be sold at the Big Rock Singers’ concert on Dec. 6.

Proceeds from the bake sale will go towards the Rowan House Women’s Emergency Shelter and KidSport Okotoks.

“We’re just a group of teens that like baking, make money and have fun with it,” said Kaillie Beaulieu, a Grade 10 student at École Beausoleil.

The teens are graduates of the Town of Okotoks youth leadership group.

The students chose to hold a charity bake sale as their practicum project last year, a required component of LEAD.

“This year we decided to get together again – outside of LEAD – and do it again because we had fun doing it,” said Maddie O’Neill, a Grade 9 student at St. Francis of Assisi of Academy.

The bakers were kneading dough and turning on ovens as they prepared shortbread, chocolate chip and gingerbread cookies as wells as vanilla cupcakes to help some of their favourite causes.

“We donated to Rowan House last year and we decided to do it again,” O’Neill said. “We decided to do KidSport this year so we can help kids.”

Shortbread was a favourite when it comes to taste, however good taste comes through hard work.

“They are pretty hard to make, a lot of hard work mixing with your hands,” said Abigail Hensky, from St. John Paul II Collegiate.

The outcome of that hard work will be on sale at the Big Rock Singers’ Dec. 6 concert Christmas Joy – A Celtic Celebration at the Okotoks United Church at 7 p.m.

The Big Rock Singers are also helping the community — 30 percent of tickets sales will go to the Western Wheel Cares fundraiser.

The Wheel campaign collects donations, which are distributed to eight charities in the Foothills.

A Celtic Celebration will have three performances, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 7 a matinee at 3 p.m. and at 7 p.m.
