Activities celebrate Senior's Week

It seems another year has passed since Seniors Week was with us. I guess that’s the way things happen as you get older — the years come and go quickly.

It seems another year has passed since Seniors Week was with us. I guess that’s the way things happen as you get older — the years come and go quickly.

Once again the Province has declared the first week of June as the week to celebrate seniors as “Vibrant Leaders in the Community”. This is so true. If you look at most charity groups one finds seniors doing great work. It could be their church, meals on wheels, driving people to doctors — to name only a few — a senior is volunteering.

We kick the week off with a celebration for all seniors on Friday, June 3, at the Okotoks Recreation Center at 1 p.m. This is open to all seniors in the town and district. It’s great entertainment, good food and super prizes so don’t miss.

The entertainment will be highlighted by the great storyteller Old Ugly and the local music group Top Secret Blue Grass. It’s a great way to spend two hours on a Friday afternoon, so all we need is you. Also in attendance will be many of the 2011 Leaders of Tomorrow nominees who are chosen for the contributions they have made in the community. What a wonderful pairing of the old leaders and the youth leaders all at the same time.

This is all brought to by the following: Town of Okotoks, Okotoks and District Seniors, Alberta Health Services, Sandstone Lodge, Sheep River House, Adult Day support Program and Revera Heartland.

The following week, on Saturday June 11 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. the Okotoks and District Senior Center presents a Senior Information Fair with many services seniors might need for support in their daily lives. If you are new to the town it gives you the opportunity to view the facility and what it can offer for you in friendship and fellowship. Door prizes, coffee and snacks are provided as well as relaxed time with the service providers.

Remember both programs are free and open to all seniors 55 years or older who would like to attend.
