Winter Festivals in the Lakeland Region

The temperatures are dropping, the roads are getting slick, and is that snow I see? With fall come and gone, winter has arrived.
7 - Winter Festival in Lakeland

It can be tough to not fall victim to the winter season blues but joining in on winter festivals is a great way to lift your spirits! COVID-19 has seen many events and programs cancelled this year, but that won’t stop the holiday spirit. Get your best winter sweaters ready, arm yourself with mittens and a good scarf, and get ready to explore!

Lac La Biche Holiday Parade of Trees

Determined to not let “COVID be a grinch,” Lac La Biche & District Chamber of Commerce is partnering with local organizations to host this year’s Holiday Parade of Trees. The event was originally cancelled back in October, but organizers pulled up their argyll-printed socks and got to work on making an adjusted event. Trees will be spread throughout the community to encourage physical distancing and get the community out and about exploring local businesses. A map of tree locations will be made available and festival participants will receive stamps from participating businesses to complete a festive passport that can be submitted into a draw. Details will be shared to the organization’s Facebook page.

Bonnyville Festival of Trees

While this festival comes from the neighbouring community of Bonnyville, its new online format makes participation only a few clicks away. Every year, Bonnyville hosts a Festival of Trees to get everyone into the holiday spirit while raising funds for local organizations. The event has gone digital this year due to COVID-19 and everyone can join in on the holiday fun from home! Place your bets on whimsically decorated trees and, of course, the much beloved Wine tree. The festival is scheduled to run from November 18 to December 7.

Winter Festival of Speed

Though there doesn’t appear to be an update on this annual classic, it’s not a bad idea to keep your eyes open for updates on the Winter Festival of Speed. This Lac La Biche event brings some heat to the frigid February temperatures and is fun for the whole family. With car racing, snowmobile drags, and motorcycle and quad races, this is one high-speed winter festival you don’t want to miss.

Preparing for the Season

The holiday season may feel a little different this year, but there is no shortage of winter fun to be had. Event planners have plenty to juggle between budgets and COVID-19 restrictions and with the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, festival goers would be wise to check in on event updates as we get closer to festival start dates.
