OLDS - A 70-year-old woman has been found dead inside an Olds residence after firefighters were called to the location on Sunday, said Olds fire chief Justin Andrew.

Fire department members were called to a medical emergency at the residential dwelling at 4433- 47 Ave. on May 8 where they found the woman, he said.

The interior of the home showed signs of a ventilation-controlled fire with heavy soot, smoke and thermal damage, but had self extinguished prior to the fire department’s arrival, he said.

Olds RCMP, the medical examiner’s office and fire investigators are investigating the cause of the fire and the circumstances of the fatality, he said.

“At this time, the case of the fire is not deemed suspicious, and preliminary investigation indicates an electrical failing may be the cause,” he said.

The woman was the lone occupant of the residence, he said.

The name of the decease has not been released.

In the press release, Andrew said a ventilation-controlled fire is one within a closed space that is relatively airtight.
