OLDS — An Olds resident is one of three finalists in Seasons Retirement Communities’ Remarkable Residents program.
Arthur Marshall and his wife Helen live in the Seasons Encore facility in Olds.
The company operates retirement facilities across Alberta and Ontario. Its Seasons Remarkable Residents program is now in its 11th year.
Marshall came from Scotland to Canada in 1953 alone with two suitcases and $50.
He and his wife Helen raised their three children on a Bowden-area farm, along with those of Helen’s twin brother and his wife after that couple passed away in a tragic accident.
“Arthur strongly believes in serving his community, as he was an active member and leader of the 4-H and was voted a delegate of a zone for the Alberta Cattle Commission, supporting solutions for the farming industry that are still in practice today,” a news release says.
Marshall became chairman of the Hospital Cattle Roundup for the Red Deer Regional Hospital, where he organized and spearheaded many functions and fundraisers to help purchase essential items for the hospital. In 10 years, more than $1 million was raised.
He also played a vital role in supporting the Bowden Daze Rodeo, Church Fall Beef Supper, and Lions Club.
For all he did for his community, Marshall received an Alberta Centennial medal.
He is most proud of receiving the Red Deer County Outstanding Farm Family Award.
Marshall and Helen are active in their Seasons community, planting and decorating during harvest and collecting bottles and cans to donate to local charities.
Marshall says his biggest blessing is the family he and Helen have raised and the farm they have built together.
“I didn’t win the Nobel Prize, but I feel delighted with our 10,000 head feedlot operation, 20 quarters of land, and 10 quarters of rented land,” he said.
“This is material proof that I had accomplished the goals I had set for myself when my feet touched this Canadian soil.”
Voting for the Seasons 2023 Remarkable Residents began June 15 and ends June 26.
The finalist whose video receives the most likes and shares will be crowned the winner and receive one month of free rent and a $10,000 donation to a charity of their choice.
The remaining two finalists will each receive a $5,000 donation to a charity of their choice.
