WESTLOCK, Alta. – Following a lengthy RCMP investigation, an elderly Westlock woman faces two Traffic Safety Act (TSA) charges in relation to a June 2022 collision on Highway 44 south that claimed the life of a Barrhead motorcyclist.
Westlock RCMP Staff Sgt. Al Baird confirmed Sept. 16 that the woman, who they’ve declined to name, is charged with careless driving, TSA 115.2 (B), and making an improper left-hand turn under 26.1 of the TSA — her first appearance in Westlock Provincial Court is slated for Nov. 2.
“When the traffic analysts get involved they have to do a comprehensive report so that takes some time,” Baird explained.
Police were called to the scene of the crash just after 2:25 p.m., June 19, after a car heading south on Highway 44 turning left into the cemetery (Township Road 594) collided with a motorcycle heading north. The 54-year-old female driver of the motorcycle, who was from the Barrhead area, was declared dead at the scene, while the driver of the car, a woman from the Westlock area, was taken to hospital as a precaution and later released. Following the crash the highway was closed for hours for clean up and a collision analyst was called in.
