Cooper’s Crossing, a Pre-K to Grade 5 school in Airdrie, will be participating with other schools from around the globe in an attempt to set a new plastic cup staking world record.

"Stack Up!," is an event held globally from Nov. 14 to 16, where students from 2,367 schools in 12 countries attempt to set the world record for “Most People Sport Stacking at Multiple Locations”. Last year, 737,863 “stackers” were registered by the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA), a new record.

Cooper’s Crossing has participated in this event for the last five years and has registered 440 stackers. All of the school’s students will be able to take part during their gym classes.

“The event is a lot of fun for kids,” said Trena McKinnon, the Child Development Advisor at Cooper’s Crossing.

This year's WSSA goal of 750,000 registered stackers has already been surpassed; the current total sits at 783,205, as of Nov. 7. Last year, Cooper’s Crossing successfully contributed to the new record and all participating students received certificates to commemorate their achievement.

“Sport stacking is an activity enjoyed by all ages and cultures,” said WSSA Founder Bob Fox in a press release. “It promotes hand-eye coordination, brain activation, fitness, teamwork, and is lots of fun.”

Over the period of the Nov. 14 to 16, students at Cooper’s Crossing will dedicate their gym classes to stacking.

“This year, a Grade 4 class created a choice board for classes to pick activities and games related to stacking,” said McKinnon.

The WSSA provides registered schools with packets that contain everything they need to participate in Stack Up!, including instructions on how to register their stackers. According to the WSSA website, speed stacking is a “track meet for your hands at warp speed.”
