Police in Lethbridge, Alta., seize and dispose of two live mortar rounds

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — The Lethbridge Police Service says an explosives disposal unit seized and safely destroyed two live mortar rounds on the weekend.

Police say one 82-mm round was discovered Saturday in a garbage can near a supervised consumption site and the other was found in Galt Gardens urban park.

Police say the consumption site and surrounding parking lot were evacuated while the building was searched, but nothing further was found.

A second round was discovered a short time later off a walking path in the park.

Police had received a report earlier last month about two unidentified people who had been observed with a backpack that contained what appeared to be two explosive devices.

The complainant was able to provide a photo of the devices, which matched the round located at the safe consumption site.

Military explosive ordnance disposal technicians helped city police destroy the rounds.

An investigation is ongoing into who placed the rounds at the two sites.
