OKOTOKS – The Laura Walker rink, ranked fourth heading into the 2020 Alberta Scotties improved to a 2-0 record on Wednesday evening after defeating the Marla Sherrer rink 9-2.
In the second draw of the tournament at the Murray Arena in Okotoks, Walker looked confident and showed no signs of fatigue after playing to an extra end earlier in the day.
“We had a really close battle this morning, falling behind early and then grinding out a win. It was kind of good to put ourselves in that position and see that we could win from behind,” said Walker. “Tonight we did the opposite. We played really well from the get-go. We placed our rocks really well and took the game to them from the start. That’s important for our mindset to know we can play both ways.”
Sherrer, who is making her third appearance in a row at the Alberta Scotties, was two points behind through five ends. Walker exploded for three in the sixth, opening up a daunting five-point gap.
“We had some bad misses and they took full advantage of the opportunity,” said Sherrer.
The Lacombe rink looked visibly rattled in the seventh end and Walker once again took advantage stealing two more points. Sherrer conceded the match after seven ends, losing 9-2 and falling to 0-2 in the tournament.
“There was no way we were going to come back from that,” Sherrer said. “It is still early in the tournament, we just have to put those loses behind us and come back tomorrow with more focus.”
Krysta Hilker picked up where she left off from the afternoon draw. The St. Albert four provided more drama in the tournament as they upset third-seeded Kayla Skrlik 10-6, becoming the tournament's dark horse. Hilker opened up a commanding 9-2 lead heading into the seventh, but Skrlik clawed back, which will help in the standings, as she sits at 1-1.
Casey Scheidegger suffered her second loss of the tournament in a close 6-4 cat-and-mouse game against Jodi Vaughan on Wednesday falling to 0-2. Neither team scored multiple points. With the victory the Vaughan rink improved to a 1-1 record.
Kelsey Rocque also improved to a perfect 2-0 record to open up the provincial championship. The rink from Lethbridge defeated Nicky Kaufman 5-3. Following the loss, Kaufman is 0-2 in the tournament.
